June 19, 2019 - Racine is among 10 cities chosen to pilot a national economic mobility initiative funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Ballmer Group. The city will participate in the $12 million national initiative aimed at identifying, piloting and measuring the success of interventions to accelerate economic mobility, Mayor Cory Mason and the funding partners announced Tuesday. Over the next 18 months, Racine will partner with several organizations to help residents attain their high school equivalency diploma.

June 19, 2019 - Getting a tax refund can ease some financial stress, but the bills tend to the outlast the cash. Then there’s always a surprise expense. The city of Rochester is working on a pilot program that will help low-income families by spreading out their refund and matching some of the money they put away for a rainy day. Rochester was one of 10 cities selected for a matched savings program geared to families who receive the Earned Income Tax Credit, which is for low- or moderate income workers who meet specific requirements. The program is funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Ballmer Group.

June 19, 2019 - Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Ballmer Group announced the 10 cities that will join their initiative to increase economic mobility. The cities, selected after a competitive bidding process, are: Albuquerque, NM; Cincinnati; Dayton, OH; Detroit; Lansing, MI; New Orleans; Newark, NJ; Racine, WI; Rochester, NY; and Tulsa, OK. During the 18-month program, each city will develop and measure an initiative to help improve their residents’ economic mobility. They will also share best practices and experiences to model how future collaboration on the issue could look.

Supported by $12 million in investments announced last fall to expand Bloomberg Philanthropies' What Works Cities — an effort focused on improving the use of data and data-based evidence by municipal governments — the initiative will support new, more effective interventions aimed at addressing rising income inequality and declining economic mobility.

June 18, 2019 - Newark’s newest initiative to provide free legal help for low-income tenants facing evictions is getting a major boost from three of the largest philanthropic organizations in the world. Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Ballmer Group announced Tuesday they were investing $12 million in 10 cities -- including Newark -- to promote economic mobility. Newark, the only city picked in New Jersey, will focus on affordable housing and reducing evictions. “We’re honored to be part of this, they are highly selective,” said Natasha Rogers, Newark’s Chief Operating Officer and Interim Deputy Mayor.

The work comes through a $150,000 grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Ballmer Group. Over the next 18 months, New Orleans will engage disadvantaged youth in services that increase their employability.
