June 18, 2019 - Detroit and Lansing are among ten U.S. cities picked to be part of an effort to improve economic mobility. Foundations linked to billionaires Michael Bloomberg, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer are behind the effort to improve the future of America’s children. In Detroit, the initiative will assist the city in people living in affordable housing units to economic opportunities. In Lansing, the program will identify, pilot and measure the success of interventions to promote upward economic mobility.

Over the next 18 months, Newark will focus on reducing eviction rates amid rising local housing costs to help ensure that long-term residents share in the benefits of local economic growth.

Through this initiative, Tulsa will help youth aged 18 to 24 who are not currently employed or in school access education and training for high-quality jobs.

June 18, 2019 - The City of Racine is one of 10 cities chosen for an initiative headed by Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Gates Foundation and the Ballmer Group to tackle economic mobility. According to a press release from Bloomberg, the 10 cities have already begun working with a team of advisors from Results for America and the Behavioral Insights Team, both partners in What Works Cities. Each city chose a specific initiative for improving economic mobility in the community and will work with national experts to develop said program and could receive up to $150,000 in grant funds.

June 18, 2019 - The Cantrell administration is getting a cash infusion from a number foundations to create a plan to help people find work. The $150-thousand dollars to get the plan going comes from a partnership among the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Ballmer Group and Bloomberg Philanthropies. With a $12-million endowment, the partnership is donating to ten American cities to participate in new national initiative to identify, pilot, and measure the success of interventions to accelerate economic mobility for their residents.

June 18, 2019 - Three prominent national funders have selected Detroit and Lansing as two of 10 cities across the country to take part in a $12 million initiative aimed at identifying, piloting and measuring the success of interventions to improve income levels and wealth for residents. Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Ballmer Group launched the initiative in November to identify barriers to economic mobility, understand the impact of potential interventions and share what works. Detroit and the other cities will work with a team of advisers from What Works Cities.

The City of Dayton and Preschool Promise will work together on this effort, with the goal of creating more opportunities for parents to engage in activities that help build children's brains and eventually to enroll in preschool.
